My summer at Salomon Gardens was my first experience of farming, and Salomon and Nina could not have been more welcoming or more accommodating of what I hoped to take away from my internship. Salomon “geeks” everything about the farm, from the soil biota and the lambing schedule to the mysterious lives of the native birds and beetles that he shares the pasture with. He’s spent a lifetime in agriculture, but the farm is still young, it’s still growing and evolving and there was no task, process, or aspect of the infrastructure, big or small, that even a first-year intern wasn’t invited to ponder and improve upon. If you’re interested in any aspect of pasture-based, small-holding agriculture, but aren’t sure where to start - start here.
